About the breed
Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen
Just like with people not one dog is the same. When I look in my pack with only peebs (shortname for petit basset griffon vendeen), not one is slightly the same for me. Probably others will think different about that, think it is just like with having kids.
But let’s start with the more difficult or let’s say challenging sides of the breed. Because behind that sweet, innocent and cheeky face stands a real dog with a big character. From origin the breed was used as a scenthound, so they are pretty used to make their own decisions and stubbornness is a big talent from the peeb. Besides that they inherited a very loud and deep bark which they really love to use. And not any breed is happy to be left alone for long times, but peebs really don’t appreciate and they can let you know. They love to be in company.
So if a real stubborn dog with a loud voice fits in your life, than you have a very social and loyal companion found in a peeb. Because they love to live in packs they are very social. When you have a peeb in your life it makes your life lighter and funnier. At least when you can handle the stubbornness and are patient and have a hugh dose of humor. They bring real life in your life. And they say, a peeb is a devil outside and an angel inside. When you give them enough walks, and then I don’t mean 3 times a day around the block, they are almost angels inside. They really need challenges, long walks in woods, at beaches or by bike. Then they are pretty calm inside the house. But realize most can’t be off leash, because they live to follow their nose. And their nose wins over their ears. So we really recommend a fenced garden when having a peeb.
Most peebs are pretty fooddriven and love to learn tricks, they are very clever. And then they love to obey you when there are no distractions and there are treats. But don’t let you fool, they are only clever when they see the benefits for themselves.
When we look at the dog he has a cheeky and happy face. The breed is also called the happy breed, but not because of this lovely face. It is because their tail is always up and waggling, if it is not you can be sure something is wrong with your baby. Between this face and tail we find a longer body. So the dog is longer than he is high because the breed is short legged (basset). And because of this the peeb is a real power dog, so strong. Don’t let you trick by his small/medium sized body. He can pull your arms out of your body. They have longer ears which you have to check at least every week for infections and hair grow.
They have a wire coat and need to be groomed at least 4 times a year.
So if you can live with the challenging sites of the peeb, they can turn your life for the better. They have really turned mine upside down in the most wonderful way for me ❤️
